Jimmy Cairns was born in Bonnybridge, stood 5ft 11in and was a left-back. He was making solid progress when he broke his leg in 1949, which badly hampered his career. Joined Third Lanark in January 1952 and from there went to St Johnstone in 1953, his final senior club.

During the war he served in the Royal Navy and he escaped from the 'Ghurka' when it sank in the Mediterranean in 1942.
