A bricklayer by trade, John had attended Craiglockhart and Tynecastle schools as a youngster and as a youth was with Slateford Athletic. Hibs signed him from Musselburgh Union in 1953 as a left-half. Afterwards he went to Merchiston Thistle. His final club was Raith Rovers whom he joined in June 1957.
