He played for Bishop Auckland in the English Amateur Cup Final and was also capped by Scotland as an amateur. In May 1954 he joined Southend United, making 16 FL appearances and scoring 1 goal. His last club was non-League
Weymouth.

Misc/trivia :- Bill was part of the 15-man squad for the inaugural 'Torneio Octogonal Rivadavia Correa Meyer' in Brazil in the summer of 1953. He played in Hibs' last game of the tournament Vs Fluminense on 20/06/1953 at the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro (A 0-3).
