The players of both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect to Sir John Bruce, the former Hibs chairman, who had died on December 30. Bobby Smith opened the scoring and Arthur added a quick-fire double to secure the points before half-time.

Alistair MacLeod replaced Spalding, who retired with cramp.
