John Connolly scored the winner for Saints. A brave rally in the last half-hour just failed -with Saints' full-back Willie Coburn clearing two shots off the line.

18-year-old Willie McEwan had a notable debut at left-back. The youth cap subdued the tricky Kenny Aird and looked a youngster of considerable promise.

Murphy replaced Hunter.

Referee :- R.K. Wilson, Glasgow.
