John McNamee was a man-mountain of a centre-half who frightened the living daylights out of his own team-mates never mind the opposition. Tackled like the crack of doom, played as if his life depended on it and expected others to do the same. A great competitor for the club.

Other clubs :- Blackburn Rovers, Morton, Hartlepool United, Lancaster City, Workington.

In the obituary column of 'The Scotsman' (08/03/2011) is an appreciation of Dr Raymund McNamee, John's younger brother.
Apparently their great grandfather "played centre half for Hibernian early last century".

Misc/trivia :- great article by Bill Howells entitled "Toon Raider"; giving an account of the big man's exploits and run-ins with various players - most notably Alex Ferguson, Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton & Allan Clarke. Classic stuff.
