Known by the sobriquet "The Duke" Sandy was described as one of the most bewildering dribblers and powerful ball-headers of his time. Joined Celtic, along with James McGhee, in late 1890. (edited by moderator)

Celtic note: Duke was most probably named (by Tom Maley) for the Duc de Mac-Mahon, President of France 1873-79. When the great man passed-over on October 17th 1893, a Glasgow paper boy sold out his stock with cries of : "McMahon deid ! Whit'll the Cel'ic dae noo ?" (edited by moderator)
